Two things:: First and foremost, control the underlying contributing factors to the strokes, ie: the high blood pressure or cholesterol or smoking, etc. Secondly is to treat the dementia by increasing acetylcholine in the brain with aricept, etc and to decrease glutamate with namenda (memantine).

Caused by a stroke: Most people think of vascular dementia (vd) as memory and other brain impairments leading to dementia caused by one or more large strokes. There is another condition related to chronic small damage to the brain ultimately leading to dementia, this used to be called multi-infarct dementia though this phrase isn't used much anymore. Currently treatment of VD overlaps greaty with treating alaheimers.
