Prognosis: True prognostication for spinal bifida can only be made over time, most likely after neurosurgery. Factors that will determine good outcomes are if her bowel/bladder functions are intact, whether she had knee and ankle reflexes. First few weeks of life is simply way too early to prognosticate. Hard to predict: Even if future surgery/therapy goes well, it is hard to predict the eventual needs of these kids. Many walk with assistive devices early with encouragement but later abandon them for a chair to gain speed. Their best hope is a supportive family that works with them to do as well as they can.
