Remove the stones: Common bile duct stones are much more serious than gallstones due to their ability to block the liver and cause infections or pancreatitis. These can be removed non surgically by gastroenterologists (ercp), followed by surgical removal of the gallbladder to prevent any other stones from leaving the gallbladder and entering the bile duct (provided that mom is healthy enough for surgery).

Stones in bile duct: Mom will need to have a procedure done to remove the stones (before they cause problems like infection, pancreatitis). Generally done as an endoscopic procedure (ERCP) which opens the duct, extracts the stones. Safe, but possible complications include infection, bleeding, pancreatitis. Sometimes, may need surgical drainage. Generally, will need gallbladder surgically removed.
