Sometimes, but...: New throat pain can be strep throat (antibiotics are needed), a cold or a flu (antivirals might be used), or from some other cause such as allergies, irritants, or acid reflux. Usually, a person sees his doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (to see if a prescription is needed). Stomach flu often is viral, and viruses can cause sore throat.
