See dentist: Do you mean that your gums are receding and your teeth look longer? This can be caused by plaque bacteria, periodontal disease. Other causes are excessive forces on the teeth from grinding or brushing. The best thing to do is see your dentist or periodontist for an exam and treatment. Once your mouth is healthy, sometimes surgery can be done to change the gum level and make teeth lok better.

Gum recession: Is a form of periodontal disease. The causes are varied and can range from genetic predisposition, malocclusion, clenching or grinding, inadequate oral hygiene etc. The best recommendation is to see a dentist for an evaluation, x-rays and an overall work up. He can refer you to a periodontist as needed. Hope this helps.

Hard brush/occlusion: Brushing with medium to hard bristle will cause tissue recession, usually in generalized form of gum recession(occur in an area of two or more teeth). Malocclusion with protrusive or working and balancing interferences tends to cause localized gum recession (involved that tooth that have the interference or malocclusion).
