A Phantasm of Spasm: This class of medication helps migraines by contributing to vasoconstriction of the arteries and veins in the head (smooth muscle) and decreasing inflammation. It also affects the trigeminal nerve in the side of the face (a sensory nerve). If you experience aching in the skeletal muscle of the jaw and side of the head it may be due to the drug affecting these muscles or the nerve; a side effect.
