A member asked:

If a man had malaria, could it cause his children to have depression or manic depression and could it skip a generation to his grandchildren?

No: No association between malaria and depression and/or manic depression (bipolar disorder) in offspring. Mood disorders do have a genetic component and can be seen in different generations of a family.

Agree w Dr. Poinsett: Having malaria will not cause one's children to have mood disorders. Mood disorders may skip generations.
