No -- work with doc: It can be tempting to assume that mania should counterbalance depression, but this isn't the case. I agree with drs. Reynolds and amawi. The basic illness is a mood instablity problem -- it's the intensity and swings that's the issue, not necessarily what "pole" of it you're on at any one time. Acute treatment of mania may differ a bit from depression, but the goal is long-term stability.
