No not hormones: Mood disorders may be imbalance of neurochemicals but these are not "hormones" in the usual sense. A specialist in "affective" (mood) disorders will know about these chemicals and medicines to "normallize" them. Some of the simpler of these medications may be a part of your Primary Care doc's area of expertise.

You sound frightened: If your diagnosis was made based on a comprehensive assessment by a psychiatrist or psychologist it is less likely to be a misdiagnosis. Both hormonal imbalance and bipolar spectrum disorder can present with mood swings but the two can usually be teased apart with careful evaluation.
