Several days: Both the anesthetics given during surgery and the pain meds given after surgery can slow down the GI tract and lead to constipation. A stool softener +/- milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) can help.

Varies: The drugs and narcotics used for anesthesia and for post op pain control can slow the bowel. It make take several weeks to return to normal.
