Mental health.: This is a common misconception. Medications treat symptoms and not cure the problem. Following thorough initial evaluation, referral to psychotherapist is recommended, and if justified, medications are prescribed depending on diagnosis and severity, to facilitate engagement in therapy.

No one standard: I can't speak for the whole industry but providers differ in their approaches. I treat a fair amount of combat related ptsd. Some of the men & women with really severe ptsd develop marked worsening of symptoms if they jump right into talking treatment without being stabilized on medications first. I see some patients come in asking for psychiatric medications who i decline to prescribe to until.
