Great question: Great question, yet it's not possible to make talk therapy "mandatory." not everyone wants to do it, and payment for it is an issue also. Our culture demands quick fixes for anxiety, upset, sadness, grief, or any other form of discomfort -- esp in primary care offices where most psychotropics are actually prescribed. Talk therapy requires us to be with & work through our uncomfortable feelings.

Prescriptions: You are unfortunately correct that both meds are prescribed too freely without practitioners taking the time to find out what the origin of problems are and then helping people develop new coping strategies that will lift mood and allow people to sleep potentially without medication.

Over-prescribing?: In my opinion, this may apply more to non-psychiatrist prescribers, to treat symptoms. Most trained psychiatrists perform timely evaluations & base their medication-selection on the outcome of that.
