Aspiration: With general anesthesia the very reason one is to not have any liquids or foods is so that while the person is under general anesthesia they do not regurgitate this and then have it to into one's lungs and kill the patient. It is absolutely dangerous to drink or eat before surgery!

Cancel operation: Not eating or drinking before a surgical procedure is required as there is a risk with anesthesia of emesis and aspiration of stomach contents. This can lead to a horrible pneumonia. Taking key medications (like blood pressure) with a sip of water is ok but check with your surgeon.
