Not always.: A psychiatrist just like anyone else doesnt have to do anything. It would be nice and preferred to be clear direct and concise but people use their own judgement.

Guidelines: Many psychiatrists have written guidelines in treatment contracts, so that these are understood from the start. Should a patient violate these, it can be discussed in treatment or a decision can be made to end treatment. In this case the patient is provided several referrals for alternative psychiatrists. The psychiatrist is usually available for emergencies for 30 days. Laws differ by state.
