A swollen hand can: Be painful, stiff and difficult to care for even in th absence of fracture. Swelling in the hands and fingers and joints makes everyting feel tight and if the fingers are not gently mobilized, stiffness and even contracture can set in. Ice, antiinflammatories, gentle elevation, stressing passive and active motion, hand therapy all can help. Follow up is important even w/ negative xray.

RICE : It's an old saying we have but effective ...R.I.C.E therapy (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) may seem like simple things to do but they are very effective and will significantly decrease swelling. Decreased swelling = decreased pain and better movement. Keeping an anti-inflammatory otc med on board would likely be a good idea as well.... As long as you are not allergic.

Splint & rest: For 5-10 days, with orthopedic follow up /er-exam if still having symptoms. Not all fractures show up on initial x-rays, and may not be a bone injury. Could be all soft tissue from the impact, which might need an mri, depending on the extent & severity of symptoms present on recheck.
