May I clarify?: This is a little less than twice the top of the reference range. If the result is accurate, then it's a warning that something's seriously wrong. If your liver's not malfunctioning, you may have a mild case of one of the urea cycle enzyme deficiencies -- this isn't super-rare. We see levels that are much, much higher in people who are actually gravely ill. Keep the workup going on & good luck.

High: It is an elevated level of ammonia that you are referring to. Whether it is dangerously high or not -- i've seen higher levels, but each level should be taken individually as some lower levels may be high enough in some folks to cause mental changes, whereas chronically elevated levels in other individuals may not produce the same symptoms just because the brain has been adapting to that.
