What would cause an epliglottis spasm? and how common of an occurance is it? i have had a sore throat and difficulting swallowing for awhile now

Sore throat: The epiglottis is the "trapdoor" that closes to divert food away from the voice box. If there is spasm in the voice box, it is usually the vocal cords that do it. It can be very anxiety provoking, because it feels like you can't breath. In adults, it may be uncomfortabel , but is usually not dangerous. If you have a prolonged sore throat, see a doctor. I recommend you stop smoking too.
