What tests do psychiatrists do before prescribing medication?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends: They may evaluate other causes of depressive or anxiety like symptoms, such as thyroid function, blood and iron for anemia, B12 deficiency, testosterone function. Also, evaluating kidney and liver function for metabolism of medication, or the effects from alcohol abuse. Some addiction clinics also may check a urine dipstick for drugs of abuse.
