what can i do if my 14 year-old son is cutting himself, what can i do to help him ?

1 doctor answer
Dr. Heidi Fowler
24 years experience Psychiatry
Your son needs : Professional mental health care now. Any person who engages in repeated cutting needs mental health assistance. A comprhensive psychological evaluation is needed. The person may need medications to help treat problems like anxiety, depression or bipolar disorder. If the cutting is associated with substance abuse – detoxification, 12 step program involvement or rehabilitation may be indicated.

Dialectic Behavioral Therapy is especially beneficial for people who engage in self-harm. I always take self- mutilation in a teenager seriously. Take care.
