Common problem: Stool retention is a common problem of childhood that may become evident as soon as a child develops some control of the emptying process. A stool mass presents to the emptying chamber releasing a message to the brain that may allow release of the material or retain it. Chronic retention leads to a ballooning of the large bowel, loss of sensation & ability to sense leaking &chronic soiling.

See your physician: Soiling could be as simple as overflow constipation and as complicated as a spinal cord tumor or tethered spinal cord. Your child would benefit from a thorough physical examination to make sure that serious pathology which will progress isn't missed. See your physician and get the health care that will put your mind at ease.
