Pharyngitis: Strep throat is called streptococcal pharyngitis. It is caused by an infection of streptococcal bacteria. It is very common and easily treated with antibiotics.

Pharyngitis: Presumably when you say "strep", you're referring to sore throat or pharyngitis. Not all sore throats are caused by strep. In fact, most aren't, such that antibiotics are almost never needed to treat sore throats.
