A member asked:

If let's say, a person takes psych medications like xanax (alprazolam) for a few months and gets off it, does the brain chemically rebalance itself (5htp, etc)?

Yes: It is reasonable to gradually taper off such meds especially if taking on dialy basis to reduce. Chances of significant mood disoders with abrupt withdrawal.

Anxiety: Yes your brain can rebalance itself. Be careful with 5htp as it is not regulated and you can't be sure of dosage and quality. If you are struggling with anxiety or depression consult a mental health professional who can help you uncover the cause of your distress and help you develop better ways of coping. Best wishes.

Brain: Being on medications does not offset the brain balance. The term 'chemical imbalance' is loosely used to try explain how medications work.
