Various reasons: There are various reasons an xray technician would ask about prior chest surgery. It may be a standard preprocedural question, or if there were a scar on the chest, or if an MRI were being done (sometimes MRI can't be done if certain surgeries/implanted devices are present).

Unknown: If before the film, it may be on the protocol / history in attempting to set ranges. Or after the film she may have seen something to relate to the radiologist.
