Wound VAC: Wound vac therapy dressings are usually changed every 2 - 3 days. Vac therapy generally results in a reduction of swelling around the wound. If your hand has become swollen and painful, this is unusual and probably not due to the wound vac. Please notify your provider about the situation. He may want to remove the dressing to see if there is an infection or other problem developing underneath.

Of course: However, I have never seen a vac cause swelling. Is there a secondary dressing that is compressing the forearm. Also, you need to rule out a clot in your venous system of your upper extremity. Go see your doctor so he can evaluate things.

Precautions: Make sure the adhesive dressing is not causing circumferential constriction. Keep your hand elevated and perform hand exercises to activate the pump action of the muscles. Sometimes a light compression sleeve beyond the vac may also help to limit edema and swelling but discuss with your surgeon first.
