Would it be considered inappropriate to ask a psychiatrist for certain meds?

No, however...: You can ask, but if your psychiatrist does not feel it is in our best clinical interest, or there is a strong concern for addiction, they may not prescribe you the meds you are asking about.

Patient Empowerment: You certainly may ask for a specific treatment and express all questions and concerns about treatment. Your psychiatrist will then answer all questions and discuss all treatment options. S/he will make what s/he considers to be safe, effective, wise treatment recommendations in light of the complete assessment. Be honest and find a md with whom you can have a good working relationship.
