Lid speculum: A mechanical device called a lid speculum holds your eyes open during lasik. You cannot close them with this device in place.

Doctor does it: The surgeon uses an instrument to gently open and separate your eyelids during the surgery. The instrument is called an eyelid speculum and is not painful.
