Depends: Cataract surgery is usually done with local anesthesia and sometimes intravenous sedation. An anesthesiologist is not necessary, but many facilities utilize them to provide the sedation and monitor the patient.

Most cases anesthesi: Most often in the U.S. There is either an anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist. Cataract surgery can be done without sedation because the topical anesthetic is excellent. Due to patient preference or medical reasons i will sometimes perform cataract surgery without sedation. The patients do very well. In these cases it would be possible to not have an anesthesiologist present, but I have one.
