Due to blood loss: Any time you will loose blood, your anemia will get worse.

A significant % of: Women in the us teeter on the precipus of fe deficiency because of a monthly blood loss and the generally fe poor nature of the american diet. With blood loss comes fe loss, and this fe must be replaced by oral intake. Fe is needed to make hemoglobin. Guys don't have this problem obviously, but certainly can have fe deficiency if intake does not compensate for losses (eg., GI bleed, epistaxis, etc.
