It can cause this: It depends on the severity and origin of the hydrocephalus. Congenital (or birth) hydrocephalus can cause behavior problems as well as developmental delay or mental retardation. Normal pressure hydrocephalus, seen in adults who were previously normal and often due to trauma or an autoimmune process, can also cause irritability. Neither type is "meanness" but rather a brain disorder.

Cause of hydrocephal: Depression post shunt placement is common. Has shunt placement/cns-pressures been checked? Her drinking may be "self medicating" for depression or anxiety. Post shunt her risks for seizures is increased and alcohol makes it worse. Alcohol alone can cause irritability. Irritability can be part of depression or anxiety or some seizures. Discuss with neurosurgeon & fam. Dr., maybe see a psychiatrist.

Hydrocephalus: In adults hydrocephalus may result from bleeding withing the skull from an aneurysm rupture, or brain trauma, or a tumor obstructing spinal fluid pathways. Headache, irritability, depression and cognitive problems causing frustration are some of the symptoms. You should consult your primary care doctor, who may refer youi to a neurologist or order an MRI to see oif hydrocephalus is present.
