Different types: There are different types of infections like virus, bacteria or fungal. It can be tb, staph. Rsv, hsv, and many others. The purpose is to protect patient and visitor alike from spreading the disease to one another.

Anything Possible: If diseases are still infectious and could be transferred by inhalation, a patient may be placed in a negative pressure room for treatment, or observation. So, the possibilities are as endless as whatever inhalation-based disease you could conjure up. Also, it might be the only bed available on that floor. Hospitals are funny places like that. Talk to the charge nurse, he/she will give you more.

Many Possibilities: A person in isolation behind glass may be to protect others from their infection or to protect the patient from being infected by others. There is no single, specific organism that requires isolation behind glass.
