Both ankles are key: When we sit for an extended time, gravity pulls are fluids down to our feet and ankles. This results in swelling. There are many causes of such fluid retention, i.e. Weak veins, blocked lymphatics, kidney function..., swelling can cause pain from the pressure on the ankle bones. The key here is that it in both ankles are having pain. If pain is constant, some tests may be in order.

Elevate them: I would not think a 23 year old would get that much swelling in a car ride under normal circumstances. Do you have varicose veins? Are you heavy? Eat a lot of salt?
