Such injuries will cause the spillage of blood under the skin that will eventually break down and be re-absorbed by the body. It will go through several color changes over time while the area recovers. The time needed will depend on your circulation at the site. Ice packs in the 1st 24 hrs often reduce the immediate swelling. After that point they can slow recovery by slowing circulation.

Blood will be gradually absorbed and ice packs will keep the swelling down. Rest and elevation will also help. An oral anti inflammatory will also help. Good Luck
