When smokers get that hole in their throat, why can't it be closed?

Laryngectomy: Those people have their larynx or voice box removed. This structure is important for airway protection, speech, and breathing. If it is removed, in smokers with cancer, the trachea which leads to the lungs has to be exteriorized and connected to the environment through the neck. Otherwise, food and liquid would go right down the trachea and cause severe coughing and choking.
