Wait to worry: Most such lumps are benign unless it is a big lump(>one inch in size) and it is steadily growing and feels hard. But one week is not long to get an imaging test done(it can be ultrasound or ct scan is an alternative). , in the meantime your doctor can give you his impression of what it is likely to be, if you ask.

Wait for ultrasound: You have a neck mass. You have to wait a week for the ultrasound. You are better off waiting a week even if it is cancer. The doctor will start with ultrasound but may also need to do a fin e needle aspiration at the same time so the diagnosis can be made. A thyroid nodule, lymph node enlarged are all possibilities. Your doctor will discuss all.
