Several inches: This can be a useful medical technique for diagnosis. The probe can penetrate for 3-5 inches but will never be inserted to the point of discomfort. It has become a political issue and may be used as a means to support and anti-abortion agenda - which sensible people consider an invasion of privacy bordering upon rape.
