Injury or infection: Discoloration of a toenail typically happens with injury (like bruising under the nail, or sometimes some kinds of fungal infections. Toenails grow slowly (3-4 months for a little toenail to completely grow out), so it's normal for the discoloration to last a long time. If you are having pain, or if the discoloration spreads to other nails or beyond just the nail, see your doctor to check it out.

Dark Toenail: There are several ways your toenail could turn black, including: injury or trauma to the nail or affected toe, fungal infection, repeated trauma from running or athletic activities, ill-fitting or tight shoes, malignant melanoma (an extremely rare condition). See your doctor for a diagnosis.
