Local inflammation: Probably just a little plebitis or inflammation of the vein. It is due to the catheter or possibly caused by something you were given thru the iv. Try placing a warm compress to the area for about 20 minutes several times daily. If the symptoms persist or worsen you may need to see your doctor for an antibiotic.

WARM packs, NSAIDS: An I.V. Can cause superficial thrombophlebitis (vein inflammation). Heat and anti-inflammatories (nsaids) help. Examples of nsaids are aleve, (naproxen) ibuprofen, etc.. Time will heal. Be careful with heating pads/warm packs. We see burns caused by patients all the time. Use heat or ice packs 30 minutes at a time to prevent 'thermal injury'.
