At the cell level...: Inflammation of the lining of the small intestine, in conditions such at crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and impact gastrointestinal absorption. Also certain food sensitivities, such as to gluten, can cause changes to the lining of the intestine, thus slowing absorption. Malabsorption can lead to weight loss, vitamin deficiencies and abnormal stools. See your physician.
