Ankle injury: There are a couple of injuries that can occur from twisting the ankle. Of course there is an ankle sprain that can take up to 16 weeks to feel normal. You can also injure several tendons as well as there are various types of fractures of the ankle. One called ocd can cause chronic pain and can not be seen by xrays. My recommendation is to see a foot and ankle specialist and have an MRI done.

Get re-evaluated: If there was a severe sprain weeks back, it is a soft tissue injury. But you may have had an undetected bone/joint injury as well. The instability created by that kind of injury will cause a change in gait which can also affect the leg. You need to get rechecked. Options for treatment may include conservative means such as bracing or if the injury is severe, surgery may be warranted.

Could be many: Causes. Need to be checked for fracture and there are different types or grades of stains that could cause the pop. Often a tendon out of its groove around the ankle can cause a crack or pop sound.
