MRI: Mri imaging of the brain will show anatomy, so if a problem is related to changes in the structure of the brain (which most mental disorders are not unless you have had brain injury), then MRI will show the changes in structure, from the past and current. Functional (f)mri and pet imaging will show certain types of function problems.

No: A regular brain MRI are great at showing structural abnormalities. Mental disorders and thought disorders are related to a patient's cognitive function. There is an MRI modality called fmri (functional mri) that can show blood flow and energy usage by different parts of the brain, which can be helpful in showing energy usage and blood flow in specific regions of the brain.
