I always thought that focal szs. were proven via mri and lesions in the brain. am i wrong?

Yes: Mri can show the structure of the brain and suggest possible causes of seizure but cannot prove that seizure activity is focal or generalized. This determination would be better made with eeg.

Yes: Seizures often are not accompanied by an abnormality that can be seen on mri.
