Chloramphenacol: The antibiotic chloramphenacol was/ is an effective medication for treatment of many infections.However, administration to infants often led to unpredictable blood levels due to variable liver metabolism and could produce a visible grayish hue to the skin color.A rare but fatal loss of red cell building could also occur. The med has rarely been used since the late 70's for this reason.
