A member asked:

What are the side effects if most of the colon is surgically removed (due to cancer)? how does it affect digestion/elimination?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends how much: If all or most of the colon is missing, sometimes there will be issues reabsorbing water leading to looser stools and occasionally dehydration. Otherwise, if only a small portion of colon is removed, most of the time there is no major consequence. Surgery on the rectum can sometimes lead to incontinence or sexual dysfunction.
