Polyps are growths: Inside the body. Usually people are talking about colon polyps. They can be flat on the colon lining, but usually they are raised or even on a stalk (like a skin tag, only larger). When found on colonoscopy, they are removed and the tissue sent to a pathologist (a doctor who specializes in looking at cells and tissues under a microscope) to see if they are cancerous or not. Most are benign.
