A member asked:

If biopsy shows leukoplakia is pre cancerous how worried should i be even after having it removed? what chances do i have to live?

Well...: Leukoplakia is a premalignant state... And it is not necessarily cancer... And until the biopsy is read you will not know... And you will live, and most cancers are treatable... Be pro-active, and have hope

Prognosis is good: Pre-cancerous means that there is time to deal with the area. Have it removed or biopsied to confirm. many leukoplakias remain pre-cancerous but need to be carefully monitored indefinately

Leukoplakia: is the most common premalignant or potentially malignant disorder of the oral mucosa. caused by continuous and chronic irritation of the mucous membranes. Prevention is the best treatment. Avoid aggravating habits e.g. smoking, chew tobacco and visit your clinician for follow up appointments 3 times per year.
