Depends: Depends on what you are using it for. In general, Alprazolam (or xanax) is used to treat panic attacks once the attack has begun, while Lorazepam (or ativan) is used for anxiety that does not reach the level of panic.

Anxiety: Bothare for anxiety, Lorazepam is short acting and used more for generalized anxiety, Alprazolam lasts longer and is more for panic attacks.
