A member asked:

Help! exactly what is the difference between xanax (alprazolam) and lorazepam?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Xanax (alprazolam) and Ativan: Xanax (generic name alprazolam) and Ativan (generic name lorazepam) are both benzodiazepines, fast acting anti-anxiety meds. Although both are effective your doctor needs to know if you take one and it doesn't work or has unusual side effects. One isn't overall better than the other, and there are other meds in this same class. But remember they can build tolerance- the long term answer is therapy
