Now: Sciatica is a specific kind of back pain caused by pressure or irritation on the sciatic nerve. Symptoms often start in the back and go down one leg, usually below the knee. Other things can cause similar problems. Any severe pain lasting this long needs to be evaluated, and treatment directed by a good history, examination and appropriate studies.
