A member asked:

I got stung by a wasp, four days ago. it has swollen from the size of a golf ball to the size of a baseball. it is reddish blackin color and is itchy. it has not affected my breathing. cani be allergic to it or not?

Probably not: A local reaction is expected but does not necessarily mean an allergy although more recent evidence is establishing that large local reactions to stinging insects in adults may indicate an allergy. Bottom line, see an allergist and get tested and don't risk walking around without an Epinephrine autoinjector.

Allergy: You are clearly allergic to it. An oral antihistamine like Claritin or Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can help some, as well as topical steroids like hydrocortisone. You need to see your physician in any event.

Not allergic.: Need antibiotic treatment before it gets worse.
