Crowns: There are many different reasons that a tooth might need a crown. For example a tooth with large failing filling, a root canaled tooth, tooth with cracks or teeth with lots of wear etc. If a tooth is in need of a crown and not having it done , it could end up with fracture and finally lose of tooth. Consults with a prosthodontist ( specialist in crowns, implants full mouth reconstruction).

Two issues:: The 1st one is need? Crowns are recommended when the dentist feels that fillings, laminates, onlays are deemed inadequate to protect the tooth and stand the test of time. You don't want to keep paying for fillings that break or expose the tooth to extraction or rct. The 2nd is cost. Only you can determine your ability to pay and priorities. Perhaps there is some middle ground here to work with?

Crowns: Crowns become necessary when teeth are badly broken down. You may want to seek a second opinion to confirm the original diagnosis. Your Dentist can talk with you about financing options. Please remember that there are no bargains in health care.

If a tooth is broken down due to decay, and there is nt enough tooth structure to hold a filling then a crown is needed. If money is a problem you can try to go to a local hospital that has a dental department or toy a dental school, those places are where you can save a lot of money for dental treatments.
